It is entirely possible to respect a person's right to their opinion and not respect a particular opinion. It's also possible to disagree with another person's opinion and still respect the person.

It is nearly impossible to respect a person whose opinion includes the view that anyone who disagrees with their opinion deserves no respect, and furthermore, because their views differ, are morally bankrupt, ethically void, and possibly the root of all evil.

And seriously? People who write (or read) incest are no more likely to be advocating for it in real life than people who write (or read) h/c kidfic are advocating for child abuse.

TO be fair, I actually do get that if you really, really don't like Incest or RPF in SPN, about the only way to avoid it is to participate in a very small corner of fandom. People say, just look away, but I get that it can be harder than it sounds, but by the same token, I'm not a fan of painting fandom or fans with such a broad brush. It kind of undermines any sympathy I might actually have if you're going to be a twit about it.

Sigh. This is why I often feel more awkward and alienated among other gen fans than among Wincest fans. It's kind of depressing.

And I try to sympathize with their position, I really do. I myself have a huge squick against parent/child incest, and I've now been in two fandoms -- HP and SPN -- where it's common enough that I couldn't avoid it without restricting my participation to the point where I'd be missing a lot of other stuff that I do want to see. So I have to cope, and yeah, sometimes it makes me unhappy. BUT. Just because I can't avoid something that offends me, doesn't mean anyone is doing anything wrong. As long as no one's deliberately posting John/Dean commentfic in my LJ, I really can't complain of anything more than my bad luck in hating something that lots of other people like.

Nobody owes me an internet tailored to my squicks, or my literary tastes, or my morals. Or any portion of the internet, other than what I'm willing to tailor for myself.
