On what we want -- SPN stories

Of general fannish interest, I think. [livejournal.com profile] elynross has some thoughts and a couple of conversations that kind of fold into each other, both about the show and about what she wants to read and see and why.

For those of you not familiar with the force of nature that is [livejournal.com profile] elynross, "Room and Board" was written for her, and she's a huge part of the conversation I had before I wrote my first slash/incest story in this fandom.

One think I do want to comment on here is to point out that in most of my own rants, discussions, commentary, all of it, is geared more or less toward getting more of what I, personally, want out of a fandom, be that stories I like or interesting discussions, better formatted pages. It' snot an entirely selfish effort, since I tend to think I'm neither unique nor particularly special in my wants and needs in any of those areas, just possibly a little more eager/willing/able to try and articulate them.

We all want what we want, and sometimes a few of us or bunches of us all share the same wants, which you know, is what makes fandom communal and connections between fans useful and fun.

i.e. [livejournal.com profile] elynross and I have similar enough tastes in fic, that for the most part, if she recs something, I'm probably going to like it -- and I think the same is true in reverse. Or the fact that [livejournal.com profile] marinarusalka tends to write stories I like, is a fair (though not 100% indication that she and I will also share similar tastes...

I mean, I write the stories I like to read, stories I wish someone else was writing...

Any, go. Read. Participate. Be entertained or just enlightened. Commune

i got through less than two screens and i said out loud, but i don't care what you want! and the woman in the next cube said, you tell 'em.

[identity profile] maygra.livejournal.com 2006-01-27 07:21 pm (UTC)(link)
And yet, you write what I want so, we're good.

i have one week left on my contract and i am spending it taking these six spreadsheets and making the numbers on them make sense on a single spreadsheet, which is to say i am spending it on lj wondering if the sprinkler will support my weight when i hang myself with this network cable.

mostly, people don't know they want what i have until i give it to them.

I am quite sure that was true of me as well vis a vis you, once.

i don't cater. sometimes i wish i did, it would make my life hella easier, but.

[identity profile] maygra.livejournal.com 2006-01-27 07:32 pm (UTC)(link)
no need. When you wre writing stuff I didn't want, I was okay with that too. Missed it, missed you...but look...it all came back around again.

I mean, I write what I want to read, but that doesns't mean I'm not actually hunting up other people also.

and you don't cater often...but

Vin. Porch. Guitar.

I felt positively pampered.

if pampering from me is three hundred words, then i've been friggin' effusive lately.

you want my new story, you just don't know it yet.

[identity profile] maygra.livejournal.com 2006-01-27 08:22 pm (UTC)(link)
I know it. I just haven't figured out why yet, so I can tell you in a comment.

Although I'm with witch. you're probably going to break my heart (in a good way) because you nearly always do.

i resent that! i write happy endings all the time!

Hmmm. I peeked at her rant, and your previous rant, and I guess I'm all over the map.

I rarely write assyDean. I sometimes write selfishSam, but the last longer piece I wrote was sammyAngst. I flip-flop on how I feel about their father, and I love the VARIETY in what others write there. I can buy him as clueless, preoccupied, misunderstood, secretlyEvil, conflicted. ALL those things. Most people seem to be in either the LovingPapa or EvilPapa camp, though, so that makes me the one that's different.

I write what I like in Prison Break. Angsty. Tortured. Complex. Incesty Longing. In SN, I like what I write, but damned if I don't struggle with getting more of it to be slash. There are pieces I intend to write as slash, but which do not get there. The brother dynamic is just different from Prison Break. With that fandom, when I mean to write slash, it IS slash, damnit. SN is more tricky for me. Overall, my slash preferences in any fandom tend to be more toward the romantic and angsty. Not the angry, porny, D/S or what-have-you.

There are several SN authors who consistently write what I like, not just for the characterization (which is big), but also for the quality of the prose/theme (which puts it over the top). You ([livejournal.com profile] maygra) and [livejournal.com profile] witchofthedogs consistently hit it for me. [livejournal.com profile] dhvana does too. [livejournal.com profile] drvsilla has been doing it recently, and [livejournal.com profile] deannaz does for entirely different reasons than the rest of this group. [livejournal.com profile] _cee as well. And then there is [livejournal.com profile] whipper, who has been silent for awhile but whose drabbles are amazing. And there are so many others for whom not every story speaks to me as strongly, but some are just "Whoa."

I assume you write what you like as well, because otherwise why write it? But as to what you like in others' fic, harder to say. You and witchy and _cee are kind of in your own club, and you either just aren't inspired by a lot of others' stuff or you don't tend to comment on it. Can't tell.

And cementing what that style is... I tell you, witchy's stuff is just so her, and so beautiful, but what makes it her in terms of feeling and composition can be almost indefinable to me. But when I read it, I think, "Yes. That's witchy, all right."

Hope this comment lives, because LJ is in a really pissy and forgetful mood right now.

Grrr. Cr*p. Hate it when I forget to turn off the italics switch...

Gee, who knew I was ranting or asking to be catered to... I thought I was just answering a question. *g*

:::headdesk:::

I'm just bound and determined to say the worng things this week, aren't I?

I think I''ll shut up for awhile.

[identity profile] elynross.livejournal.com 2006-01-28 04:58 am (UTC)(link)
Nonono! Not you, honey! Not to me! I was just kind of blinking and amused at the reactions you got when you pointed to me! *g* I got some fun ones myself, including one that seemed like a very polite and well-intentioned "put up or shut up" on a subtextual level. *g* But it led to a lovely exchange. You (and Merry, the "stringer for Teen Incest Beat," as she put it) forced me to articulate what it was I'm looking for, and that was both fun and useful, for me and several others, apparently!

We'll have to talk more at Escapade. And show Killa eps. She's apparently willing...

*laughs* How funny that you mentioned Room and Board. I was just coming over here to tell you I finished off your interludes ^^

*hugs*
