Hmmm. I peeked at her rant, and your previous rant, and I guess I'm all over the map.
I rarely write assyDean. I sometimes write selfishSam, but the last longer piece I wrote was sammyAngst. I flip-flop on how I feel about their father, and I love the VARIETY in what others write there. I can buy him as clueless, preoccupied, misunderstood, secretlyEvil, conflicted. ALL those things. Most people seem to be in either the LovingPapa or EvilPapa camp, though, so that makes me the one that's different.
I write what I like in Prison Break. Angsty. Tortured. Complex. Incesty Longing. In SN, I like what I write, but damned if I don't struggle with getting more of it to be slash. There are pieces I intend to write as slash, but which do not get there. The brother dynamic is just different from Prison Break. With that fandom, when I mean to write slash, it IS slash, damnit. SN is more tricky for me. Overall, my slash preferences in any fandom tend to be more toward the romantic and angsty. Not the angry, porny, D/S or what-have-you.
There are several SN authors who consistently write what I like, not just for the characterization (which is big), but also for the quality of the prose/theme (which puts it over the top). You (maygra) and witchofthedogs consistently hit it for me. dhvana does too. drvsilla has been doing it recently, and deannaz does for entirely different reasons than the rest of this group. _cee as well. And then there is whipper, who has been silent for awhile but whose drabbles are amazing. And there are so many others for whom not every story speaks to me as strongly, but some are just "Whoa."
I assume you write what you like as well, because otherwise why write it? But as to what you like in others' fic, harder to say. You and witchy and _cee are kind of in your own club, and you either just aren't inspired by a lot of others' stuff or you don't tend to comment on it. Can't tell.
And cementing what that style is... I tell you, witchy's stuff is just so her, and so beautiful, but what makes it her in terms of feeling and composition can be almost indefinable to me. But when I read it, I think, "Yes. That's witchy, all right."
Hope this comment lives, because LJ is in a really pissy and forgetful mood right now.
