In this universe (aside form living through it) John never 100% reconciles himself back to a normal life even though Sam and Dean work really hard for their own. We've got other ideas on how John does interact with his granddaughters at least because Sam and Dean push and Sarah pulls - and really? who could resist four little girls.
So they do what they can and John bends as much as he is able, and if he's not entirely happy, he really is content more or less.
