I think I read slash because I identify so little with female characters in books and on TV that I generally don't want to read fic involving them. I just don't relate. In real life either, I have very few female friends who aren't genderqueer, trans, or atypical in some other way. You don't see that on TV much. Hell, I can't remember seeing it ever. It might be different if there were a female character I could relate to.
