It is entirely possible to respect a person's right to their opinion and not respect a particular opinion. It's also possible to disagree with another person's opinion and still respect the person.
It is nearly impossible to respect a person whose opinion includes the view that anyone who disagrees with their opinion deserves no respect, and furthermore, because their views differ, are morally bankrupt, ethically void, and possibly the root of all evil.
And seriously? People who write (or read) incest are no more likely to be advocating for it in real life than people who write (or read) h/c kidfic are advocating for child abuse.

Wow.

Myself, i mostly resented the 'if you are on my flist, then you agree with me' statement, which made me quite immediately *remove* myself from said flist.
Grrr.

Very vicious.
(waves peanuts and alfalfa at you.)

*runs screaming*
Keep your filthy Fabaceae away from me!
*Dean also doesn't trust Legumes*
Re: Wow.
Date: 2008-04-20 04:22 am (UTC)And yeah, being that I'm in a petty mood, her flist has gotten a little thinner. Give it a few weeks, let her post some more fic and it will be back up again, I have no doubt.
I just..I actually do like some of her stuff, but it's going to be a while before I can get past the attitude behind the user name and remember she is no more what expressing what she necessarily believes fiction-wise than I do. This is one of those cases where I kind of wish I didn't know. Sometimes ignorance really is bliss.
Re: Wow.
Date: 2008-04-20 04:38 am (UTC)Yerk. Legumes should be *banned*.
I've read her fic - had a nice few conversations with her about things fandom and etc. But ...yeah. I don't like the assumptions being made, and the brush that everyone is being tarred with. That makes me unhappy, and annoyed.
I may read more fic, unless she goes aggressively het to sort of offset all the evol slash.
*sigh*
Re: Wow.
Date: 2008-04-21 01:21 pm (UTC)Basically it just makes me sad that she has this extreme hot-button and can't seem, not just to get over it (because honestly it's not like it's that easy), but even to understand *how* someone else can enjoy it even if she doesn't. If anything, the most disturbing thing for me is the assertion that she is incapable of even *seeing* or *acknowledging* subtext. As in, "What is this subtext of which you speak?" That every story exists only on its surface level. (Because we've had this conversation about Batman, about Sam and Dean, about other genres. And it's a global thing with her.) That...that's a lack of imagination. And that's very, very disappointing.
The blanket shut-down of all conversation on the topic, that's disturbing and unsettling, too. I'm not big on any form of censorship, whether or not it's "her corner" of fandom--I don't think any topic should be taboo, or how can we achieve better communication and understanding?
I dunno. I like her and her fiction, and I'm sorry that she's stepped into this huge shitstorm by her own doing. I just don't know how to tell her how hypocritical her attitude is. And I wish there were something I could do to get at her own root cause, because I honestly think there's more going on here, given how irrational the topic makes her. Oy.
Re: Wow.
Date: 2008-04-22 10:53 am (UTC)What it is to me is both incredibly petty and tacky to diss a good portion of a fandom you are participating in in public and then pitch a fit because some people might not agree with you. You want people who write things you don't want to leave you alone as much as possible, there are less vitriolic ways to do it than throwing a hissy fit in the middle of the community center like a cranky child.
And yes, her lack of any kind of understanding or empathy for anyone who doesn't share her views makes me pretty glad I don't know her particularly well.
Re: Wow.
Date: 2008-04-20 05:32 am (UTC)I de-friended her after reading her post. She's a good writer, and I enjoy many of her fics, but I don't want her or anyone else to interpret my presence on her flist as an endorsement of her views. I'm not big into slash or Wincest, but I've gotten to know in RL enough of the people who write the type of fic she abhors to attest that they are good, smart, caring, ethical people, not the "dark side" of fandom.
I had a slight run-in with her over the writer's strike. She posted that it was over, citing Michael Eisner's comment to that effect, when in fact, the agreement hadn't been reached yet. I pointed that out, and she told me not to harsh her squee. I noted that I was simply stating facts, and she wrote, "by and large, when I post things here? I'm really not looking for a debate." Last I checked, it was hard to debate FACTS. So I haven't commented since, because apparently, all she's interested in is affirmation.
